I hope President-Elect Trump is everything you want him to be. I hope your taxes are lowered. I hope you get the Supreme Court of your dreams (actually I don't, but in theory). I hope he creates jobs. I hope you get health insurance that you can afford. I hope he's everything you hoped for and more. If you chose on the basis of the lesser of two evils, I hope you continue to believe that you did exactly that.
You know what else I hope? I hope when you said you voted for him in spite of the laundry list of things he has said and done that would make him unacceptable for almost any job, let alone President of the United States, you meant it. You weren't voting for him per se, but for the bigger picture, the greater good, whatever it was that made him your choice. I believe you and I believe in your right to do so.
But a lot of people are scared of this president-elect, and what might happen to them in Trump's America. I hope that you understand that, and I hope you own that you have played a hand in that fear. I hope you feel like it is your job to watch him closely, and to get to know the people he chooses to help him run this country. I hope you consider it your duty speak up when he is making bad choices. I hope you hold him accountable, because you trusted him with your vote.
I am one of the scared people. A lot of people who love me (and wanted me to stop hyperventilating) reassured me that our soon to be president would surround himself with good, smart people. That America would be okay. That did calm me for about as long as it took me to take a deep cleansing breath. But Trump's selection of Steve Bannon as his chief strategist, is truly worse than my worst fears. And honestly, my worst fears are pretty frightening. As you probably know by now, Bannon was the CEO (until August when he left to work for the Trump campaign) of Breittbart News which is home to the alt-right movement, which is basically a white supremacist group. There are many well regarded groups who oppose this man in the White House. Having him as the President's top advisor should scare you. It sure scares me. It scares me as an American, and on a more personal level, it scares me as the mother of black sons. I hope you will speak up against this. Call your representative. Sign this petition. It will take less time than it took you to vote. No lines!
I voted for Clinton. You voted for Trump. If we sit back and don't speak out, we both lose.
